September Devotion, Day 19

Ask of God

“But if any of you lacks wisdom,
let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.
But he must ask in faith without any doubting,
for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea,
driven and tossed by the wind.
For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord,
being a double-minded man,
unstable in all his ways.”

James 1:5-8

When I was in my mid twenties, I had an opportunity to go deep sea fishing with my Dad off Newport Bay on the Oregon Coast.  It is an experience that I am glad I’ve had, but honestly, I would never think to do it again.

The initial thought of going was fun.  I remember stopping at a sandwich shop to get plain ham and cheese sandwiches.  My Dad said, that if it didn’t have the mayonnaise and other condiments on it, it would keep us from getting seasick, and even though I thought it a strange thing to have for breakfast, it worked.  We didn’t get sick.

I remembering heading out and thinking the boat was going to break into pieces when we hit the “breakers”.  They seemed appropriately named at the time.  Then we finally got to the smoother waters and just kept going until land could no longer be seen. There was only water and sky everywhere we looked.

We caught lots of fish, and more than one fish on our line at a time.  That part was exciting too, but the thing that stood out more to me than any other part of the trip was the motion of the waves.  We were tossed to and fro on the waves; one minute way, way up, and then next way, way down, and it didn’t matter how long we were doing this, it never got comfortable and I secretly longed to get back on stable ground.

In these verses, God tells us through James, that this is what it’s like when we need wisdom, but we ask of God without faith, or maybe we don’t ask God at all.  Do you know the feeling when you are trying to make a decision, but it just won’t come and you feel emotionally tossed to and fro on the sea?  You cannot figure out what to do; one minute you feel up and then next down, and sometimes as if you might be broken into pieces.  It is probably a good time to ask God in prayer, not just for wisdom in the matter, but for the faith to believe Him in the matter.

Inspired to Cherish
Even though we have already read Proverbs 3 in our devotional, let’s head back to this wonderful book of wisdom and read it again.  I have mentioned to you that in the morning before my husband leaves for work, he reads one chapter of the Proverbs to me and it always seems to give some form of wisdom to remember throughout my day.

Let’s read the entire chapter of Proverbs 3 out loud and then write it out in our personal journal.  Now, on a 3 x 5 card let’s write out verses 5-6 and put it to memory.  I cannot tell you how many times in one week I will recall this verse and even speak it to my children.  It is a wonderful reminder and worth memorizing.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Meditation in the Wilderness

This is where I have spent my time of meditation for the past couple of days:  In the wilderness with Jesus.

The thoughts began to roll in as I finished re-reading Chapter 9 from “Life on the Highest Plane”.  Was it as God or as God-man that Jesus triumphed over satan in the wilderness?

I was thinking of how Adam was tempted in the Garden of Eden. He was tempted to become like God.  Jesus was tempted to act as God; i.e., “… command that these stones become bread.”

But, where Adam failed, Jesus overcame the temptation of satan by:

  • wholly submitting to the leading of the Holy Spirit; and
  • totally obeying the Word of God.

It’s true that Jesus’ victory in the wilderness over the temptation of the devil was our victory as well.  He did it for us – you and me!

Did this obedience that Jesus displayed in the wilderness come easy to Him?  He learned it through sufferings, trials and tribulations – it was not easy, it was learned painfully.

“For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things,
in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.”
Hebrews 2:10

and

“Although He was a Son,
He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.
And having been made perfect,
He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,”
Hebrews 5:8-9

While reading through Chapter 9, the author reminded me that this obedience took Jesus from the wilderness right on through to the Cross.  Obedience unto death according to the Father’s will.

Did this obedience reestablish unity between mankind and God?  Did it restore the image of God in man that had been marred by sin?  In both accounts, YES!

The author shows us that Jesus Christ has inaugurated a new order of people who are to be:  Heavenly, holy, pure and perfect — Just like He is. Kings and priests unto God.  By faith in Jesus Christ we shall be conformed to the image of God’s One and Only Son.  Hallelujah!

I know there is so much more to the Redemptive Truth of Jesus Christ, abundantly more than my feeble mind and heart can begin to take in.

Sometimes as I am reading along in God’s Living and Active Word, I have to just stop and ponder what I see at that moment. It comes to me in small nugget sized bites.  That’s why I keep re-writing this post. 🙂

It’s nice to stop and look at a smaller portion of what God has done for us and just marvel and bask in it for a while.

When we acknowledge our sinful state and surrender our lives to Jesus Christ, believing on Him as the Son of God who came to earth and was crucified, buried, and resurrected for us to be set free from the guilt and shame of our sins, we become partakers with Him in this glorious truth of Eternal Life.

I pray that if you have not considered Christ as your Lord and Savior that you will consider Him Today.

Keep in mind that this Bible study will be only 15 days longs since December is such a busy month for a lot of us.
Sometimes adding one more thing, can make our time of celebrating Jesus’ Beautiful Birth, a time of overwhelming misery – and we don’t want that to happen.
However, since the Word of God should come first no matter how many things we have to do,
here it is just for you!
Merry Christmas!

How To Pray For Children

Banner3333333

Praying for guidance from God as a Mom is huge to me, I need all the help I can get.  When I don’t know exactly what to pray, I always turn to the Scriptures and just read them, write them, or pray them back to God.

My daily journals are literally filled to the brim with the handwritten Word of God.  I figure they are His Words so they are true and powerful, and I choose to trust that His Word will be done.

Here’s only one of the many beautiful prayers in the Bible.  This one was written by the Apostle Paul and it is perfect to pray over our children.

Blinkin Squiggle

“… I bow my knees before the Father,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name,
that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory,
to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,
so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
and that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
may be able to comprehend with all the saints
what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge,
that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly
beyond all that we ask or think,
according to the power that works within us,
to Him be the glory in the church
and in Christ Jesus
to all generations
forever and ever, Amen.”
